Nursery youngsters learning Olympic languages

WITH the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics being staged in the UK this summer, children at a Wellington nursery have been learning to welcome visitors in many of the different languages spoken by athletes from the 205 countries taking part.

Blackdown Children's Day Nursery has even erected a special welcome sign on its front gate to greet guests in English and 14 other languages

.

Nursery manager Trudy Wilton said: "It was one thing researching the languages and spelling them correctly, but also trying to learn the pronunciations was really challenging.

"I am not sure who found it more difficult, our children or our staff!"

Mrs Wilton said the exercise was part of the nursery's cultural curriculum, which helps the youngsters to learn more about the world around them.

The 14 foreign languages are French, Afrikaans, Japanese, Portugese, Spanish, Swedish, Welsh (Celtic), Turkish, German, Romanian, Polish, Gaelic, Italian, and Mandarin.

Blackdown Children's Day Nursery offers weekday childcare from 8 am to 6 pm for parents with children aged from three months to five years.

It is located in two acres of private grounds off the A38 at Chelston, opposite the Westpark 26 business park.
