American swimmer – record man Michael Phelps could lose the medals he won during the 2012 London Olympics. It could happen if the International Olympic Committee decides that the sportsman's participation in the photo session for Louis Vuitton advertisement to be a violation of the regulations.

Phelps' photo session photos appeared on Twitter and other websites on August 13. The Olympic Games concluded one day before then, but the regulations of the International Olympic Committee prohibited sportsmen to participate in different advertisement campaigns that are not related to the Olympic Games in the period of July 18 to August 15.
This point was added to the regulations this year. Its goal is to protect the interests of sponsors and partners of the Olympic Games. Louis Vuitton is not one of them, BBC reports.
If it is proved that the photos should have been made available on August 16, the sportsman has nothing to fear. However, if it turns out that the photos were leaked intentionally, Phelps could face a harsh punishment – up to losing his medals. Best case scenario – the sportsman is presented with a harsh fine.
It should be said that the Olympic Committee has yet to comment Phelps' participation in the photo session.
On the other hand, the fashion house claims that the photos that were published on the internet are unofficial, that they were somehow stolen from the company. The sportsman's managers also note that the he has nothing to do with the leaked photos. They deny the allegations that the sportsman violated the regulations and allowed the publishing of the said photos.
Phelps was awarded four gold and two bronze medals on the London Olympics, setting a new record in the number of medals earned during Olympic Games (22). The previous record belongs to Russian gymnast Larisa Latinina (18).
