Vasyl Lomachenko (Ukraine) def. Wellington Arias (Dominican Republic), 15-3: We’ve seen good boxers so far in London. Now we’ve seen Lomachenko, who is arguably on his own level. Pure class as he decimates Arias, scoring standing eights in the first and second rounds, and shutting out the Dominican in round two (4-0). He looked, quite frankly, untouchable. He’ll face better opponents, but this is a seriously great amateur fighter.
Felix Verdejo (Puerto Rico) def. Ahmed Mejri (Tunisia), 16-7: Verdejo is a very talented, 19-year-old fighter, who has looked good in both of his fights so far. Mejri was decent here, but Verdejo’s offensive ability is really good, and his defense is better than you might expect of a true youngster. Sadly for Verdejo, he’s about to run into a buzzsaw in the quarters in the form of Lomachenko.
Gani Zhailaouv (Kazakhstan) def. Jai Bhagwan (India), 16-8: This started competitive, but somewhere in the second round, Zhailaouv took over for good. The Kazakh was down 3-2 after one, but had a 10-3 second round (with +2 for Bhagwan lowering his head), and at that point it was basically over. Zhailaouv looked better here than in round of 32, when he skirted past Saylom Ardee of Thailand on countback, and Bhagwan didn’t look nearly as good here as he did in his previous bout.
Yasnier Toledo (Cuba) def. Qiang Liu (China), 14-10: Maybe just a bit wide on the score, as both were high level and put on a competitive, closely-contested bout for three rounds. Not a lot of action, but two very talented boxers.
